The UK continued to increase its production of renewable energy in 2020 by declaring that 43% of the nation’s electricity was provided by solar, wind & biogas. This figure is more than the 37% recorded in 2019 and demonstrates a positive direction for the country’s sustainable energy distribution.
The report was published by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and included data for the total energy generation & consumption for 2020. It confirmed that fossil fuel generation continued to fall and highlighted a total of 67 ‘coal free’ days during the year. Total energy consumption was down 13% year-on-year; however this may have been due to the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown restrictions.
